Together, the Beauvent citizens’ cooperative and Lemahieu Group invested more than 1 million euros in a 2.2 MWp solar installation on the roofs of Lemahieu Group’s premises. This solar installation will also be the largest solar farm in Ostend.

Lemahieu Group’s production site will consume 40% of the green electricity produced.

Within a few months, almost 5,000 XL panels were installed on the roofs of Lemahieu Group’s premises. This installation will produce 2,000 MWh of green electricity annually, equivalent to the annual consumption of 600 families.

Lemahieu Group’s production site will use 40% of this green electricity for various activities, including processing and preservation of sawn timber and the production of ThermoWood®. The other half will be fed into the grid with a green power label.

A joint venture, LemBeau BV, was established for this purpose.

Frédéric Haghebaert, Managing Director of Beauvent: “This solar installation at Lemahieu Group is the largest in Ostend and the second largest in Beauvent's history. With our local, cooperative approach, we generate sustainable investments in renewable energy and allow the profits to be fed back to local residents. We are grateful to Lemahieu Group for the smooth cooperation and the trust they placed in us.

This project comes on the heels of the completion of a large solar installation this summer at De Lijn in Ostend and our recent expansion of the Ostend heating network.. We are proud that Beauvent is able to play such a prominent role in implementing the City of Ostend’s climate plan Leefbaar Oostende 2050 and contribute to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions in Ostend”.

Mike Lemahieu, CEO of Lemahieu Group: “The cooperation with Beauvent is in line with our sustainability policy and our continuous efforts to reduce our ecological footprint. This installation will reduce our annual CO2 emissions by 920 tonnes, equivalent to the emissions from 273 passenger cars. Our green ambitions also led to us being certified as a CO2-neutral company at the beginning of this year.

Finally, we would like to thank the Beauvent team for their highly professional approach.”

Schepen Mens & Milieu (Alderman for People & Environment) of the City of Ostend, Silke Beirens: “This year, we rolled out the climate plan ‘Leefbaar Oostende’. It was clear from the start that we would not be able to achieve our ambitious goals on our own. We need our partner organisations, citizens, and businesses to help us achieve these objectives. One of the many measures we want to implement is to scale up the installation of PV panels on large roofs of homes and business premises. This solar installation is a fantastic start for Beauvent and Lemahieu Group, and lays a strong foundation for the future.
