The project involves extending the existing centre to reorganise departments and optimise space usage. The 3,000 m² extension consists of two levels and will be raised on pillars to preserve the visual and physical connection between the inner garden and the rest of the site. This arrangement will increase the visibility and accessibility of the main entrance, which is currently located at the rear of the existing building. It will also allow additional parking spaces to be provided without affecting the surrounding grounds.
Rather than integrating the extension within the existing U-shaped building, the decision was made to locate it outside the U-shape. This creates a wider, more open inner garden, offering residents a pleasant, green outdoor space.
Fire-retardant wood cladding
A striking feature of the project is the use of larch for the façade. The wood was selected for its natural appearance, ecological properties, and warm character, all of which contribute to residents' living comfort. This choice reflects a broader vision of sustainability and architectural integration into the environment.
As this is a publicly accessible care facility, the wood had to meet strict fire safety standards, particularly with regard to the required reaction to fire class. To meet these requirements, Lemahieu Fire Protection treated the wood with a fire-retardant treatment.
This treatment ensures that the wood meets the required reaction to fire class (class B-s2, d0 according to EN 13501-1) without compromising its aesthetic qualities or lifespan.
