Together with our partner Beauvent, we have built a large-scale industrial battery in Ostend over the past few months. Our new battery installation has a total power capacity of 2 MW and a total storage capacity of 4 MWh the equivalent of 800 home batteries. Today, we are officially commissioning the installation in the presence of Ostend’s Alderman for Climate, Nature and Energy, Judith Ooms.

Frédéric Haghebaert, Managing Director of Beauvent:
“Batteries, and energy storage in a broader sense, are an essential piece of the energy transition puzzle. Thanks to batteries, we create more room for renewable electricity and make the Ostend electricity grid more robust and future-proof. As a citizen cooperative, we are proud to take the lead in this transition.”
Mike Lemahieu, CEO of Lemahieu Group:
“With this battery, we are taking another important step in making our wood processing activities in Ostend more sustainable. By intelligently storing solar energy and using it flexibly, we are increasing our energy independence and preparing for a future in which sustainable and smart energy consumption will be crucial. This collaboration proves that sustainable energy solutions are also a feasible and logical choice for industrial applications.”

Matthias Masschelin, General Manager of Bnewable Belgium:
“We are proud of the realization of this battery project for Beauvent and Lemahieu, in which our role as a total solution partner clearly comes to the forefront: from implementation to operations. This enables Beauvent and Lemahieu to deploy a turnkey battery solution, with Bnewable acting as the partner for ongoing operational management through Voltana.
By controlling this behind-the-meter battery — where production and consumption meet — we continuously optimize the balance between the needs of Lemahieu’s production site and those of the electricity grid.”
Alderman for Energy and Environment Judith Ooms:
“Local sustainable energy is an essential piece of the puzzle for the energy independence of companies and for building a robust energy grid for the future. This project shows that Ostend is not standing still. The combination of solar power, battery storage, a charging plaza and smart energy management is exactly the integrated approach we pursue as a city administration.
The fact that a local family business such as Lemahieu Group and the citizen cooperative Beauvent are investing together in this project demonstrates how an active ecosystem is growing in Ostend, where companies and citizens jointly make the energy transition a reality. With a storage capacity equivalent to 800 home batteries, we are taking a major step towards a more robust, climate-friendly and future-proof energy grid for our city.”

Over the past few months, Beauvent and Lemahieu Group have built a large-scale industrial battery in Ostend. The battery installation has a total power capacity of 2 MW and a total storage capacity of 4 MWh the equivalent of 800 home batteries. The installation is being commissioned today in the presence of Ostend’s Alderman for Climate, Nature and Energy, Judith Ooms.
The battery is located next to Lemahieu Group’s production site in Ostend and complements the 2.2 MWp solar installation on the rooftops and charging plaza. This solar installation marked the first collaboration between Lemahieu Group and Beauvent.
The smart interaction between solar energy, the battery and the charging plaza strengthens Lemahieu Group’s position as a sustainable energy player. The company is now prepared for a future in which electricity is consumed when it is abundantly available and affordable. The battery acts as the central hub, storing solar energy during sunny periods and releasing it when the sun is no longer shining or when energy demand is high.
In addition, the battery helps strengthen the Belgian electricity grid. It acts as a buffer capable of absorbing and releasing energy whenever the grid requires support.
For Beauvent, this is a first behind-the-meter battery project, following its participation in a large-scale battery park. For Lemahieu, this marks a first investment in battery storage. The development of the project, including the battery control system, was carried out by Bnewable, a Belgian expert in battery storage solutions.
